The average human head has approximately 100,000 hairs. Each hair grows for around three years and we loose roughly between 40 and 110 hairs per day.
Both men and women can suffer from hair loss. The most common form of hair loss is male-pattern baldness (also known as androgenic alopecia). This type of baldness is hereditary and will usually begin around the late twenties and early thirties. The first stage of androgenic alopecia involves a receding hairline followed by a thinning of the crown and temple areas. By the age of sixty most males will experience some degree of hair loss.
Female hair will gradually thin with age, but women only tend to loose hair from the top of the head. This type of hair loss will usually only become evident after the menopause. This hair loss condition is known as Androgenetic Alopecia or female pattern hair loss and is usually passed down through the family genes.
Continued stress can result in the tightening of the scalp restricting nutrients reaching the hair follicles and can also affect the body’s hormonal balance. Consideration should also be given to the thyroid gland as poor functioning can contribute to hair loss. Always consult your doctor before making any self-diagnosis.
Diet is also extremely important as a poor diet can age hair follicles. So give consideration to the polluting effects of fatty food and smoking as they can contribute to the problem helping to create free radicals.
Some causes of hair loss may include:
- Anaemia (blood disorder/iron-deficiency)
- Thyroid problems (under active)
- Fungal infection (scalp)
- Diet (lack of vitamins)
- Hormonal system
- Anti cancer drugs
